We’ve been following the much anticipated Sac Burger Battle for some time but because of sticker shock (we’ve been on a budget), we hadn’t gone until this year. Peter chats with Rodney aka @burgerunkies on Twitter (he’s the event founder & organizer). So when the tickets were announced this year, we knew we had to go to support. It’s for a great cause, Rodney’s a great guy and well who wouldn’t want to try 15 of Sacramento’s top chefs?

We opted in for the VIP experience, so we can arrive early and scope out the vendors and miss some of the crowds we’d heard about. The event has been selling out each year, so we figured it was going to be packed. There was so much to experience, so to share with you what we thought about it, I put together a list of 5 reasons why you need to go to next year’s Sac Burger Battle:

It’s for a great cause

The top reason you should go to the Sac Burger Battle is because it’s for a great cause. All funds raised from the event are donated to charity.

“The Sacramento Burger Battle was founded by 2012 by local burger blogger, Rodney Blackwell, to help raise money and awareness for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation because his oldest daughter has been affected by Crohn’s disease since she was 5 years old.”

15 of the best burgers from Sacramento’s top restaurants

Your ticket guarantees you access to 15 of the top burgers in the Sacramento region—Beast+Bounty, Empress Tavern, Grange, and The Waterboy to name a few—with beers, spirits, wine tasting, desserts, and live music to enjoy.

We strategized and shared each one. I personally couldn’t eat each one myself, and it gave us the opportunity to decide if we wanted to go back for seconds of the ones we really liked. By # 15 I was done, but Peter and I agreed our top two burgers were Streetzlan’s King Slider and Nixtaco’s Nixtaco Burger 2019.

I personally liked the Streetzlan burger, which was a 100% grass-fed beef slider, pork belly kakuni, togarashi mayo, “Sac sprouts” micro sunflowers, on a sesame seed bun. Peter voted for the Nixtaco burger, which was a brisket & rib smashed patty, cheddar, bacon, house spread, tomato, arugula, on a brioche bun. Both of these versions had a kick, which we loved. For a more classic burger taste, I liked the Empress Tavern cheeseburger.

Proudly enough, the Streetzlan burger was the people’s choice winner. I hadn’t heard of them before, but they are based out of Lodi. We can’t wait to take the drive out to try more of their food. Beast+Bounty won the judges choice. Check out the full list of winners on the Sac Burger Battle Instagram.

Burgers, booze & more

If you weren’t sold on the 15 burgers, the Sac Burger Battle team also brought out some of the best desserts—Baker’s Donuts out of South Sac, Devil May Care Ice Cream & Pushin’s Bakery; plenty of beverages; activities like a photo booth, caricatures, live shirt printing; and a great raffle. My favorite options were from Burly Beverages and Baker’s Donuts.

Support local businesses

One of our favorite things about Sacramento is how supportive everyone is of local businesses. It’s one of the reasons, we decided to move back and pursue our entrepreneurial endeavors. Across the board, all 15 restaurants were local businesses but what especially spoke to me was when Streetzlan had the opportunity to say thank you and mentioned that Rodney made it happen for them. They weren’t originally able to participate because of personal things and budget but the Sac Burger Battle team helped them to get sponsorship so they could participate and I love that.

Whenever I attend an event in Sacramento, my favorite thing about going is seeing the Sacramento community show up. When we left over a decade ago Sacramento was so different, so we are always so pleased to see people come out to support their community but also to have the opportunity meet people in our community. In line, we chatted with people about our favorite burgers, dessert, and drinks and it was just so interesting to get to talk to people we would probably never talk to otherwise.

We enjoyed our first experience at the Sac Burger Battle. Congrats to this year’s winners. If you have been on the fence about this event, we urge you to check it out next year. There is a lot of value and it’s for a great cause.
